From D眉sseldorf and around the world: How our education initiative has developed in the past ten years

Ten years ago, in April 2011, bg电子娱乐场 founded its education initiative 'Forscherwelt' (Reseachers鈥 World). It all started at the company鈥檚 headquarters in D眉sseldorf, where Dr. Ute Krupp developed the initiative to awaken children's curiosity about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The 'Forscherwelt' in D眉sseldorf has been the heart of the education initiative ever since. However, in the last decade, the initiative has grown and reached more than 62,000 children worldwide. The expansion process started in 2014, when Russia became the first international location to offer 'Forscherwelt' classes, closely followed by classes in Argentina. 'Forscherwelt' courses have now been held in 13 countries 鈥 with more locations joining every year.

What does the initiative look like around the world? 

Since it was launched in 2011, many 'Forscherwelt' classes have taken place all around the globe. Let鈥檚 take a look at the different locations worldwide and discover the range of activities offered as part of this initiative.

Argentinia

Alongside the first international launch of the initiative in Russia, the 'Forscherwelt' was also introduced in Argentina in 2014. The first classes were held for children of employees, starting with an event at the site in Chivilcoy. In the following years, the initiative focused on local schools. So far, more than 2,000 children have participated in activities offered by the 'Forscherwelt' initiative in Argentina.

Italy

The Italian 'Forscherwelt' 鈥 or Ricercamondo in Italian 鈥 was launched in 2016. It kicked off with a session for local schools, students and teachers at the bg电子娱乐场 offices in Milan. Shortly afterwards, the initiative traveled through Italy and offered 'Forscherwelt' classes in Bergamo, Forli, Lucca, Napoli and Padova. The project is supervised by bg电子娱乐场 employees and external partners, and has now reached 390 classes from 150 elementary schools, and even offered a temporary lab in a 'Forscherwelt' science museum. In 2020, digital formats were added and attended by 84 school classes. Overall, more than 8,000 kids attended the classes in person, while a further 1,650 students were reached through the digital service in Italy. 鈥淩icercamondo is a great opportunity to increase children鈥檚 interest in STEM subjects and support local schools,鈥 says Elena Fina, Corporate Communications Manager. 鈥淭he feedback from children and teachers has always been overwhelmingly positive.鈥

Poland

In Poland, the 'Forscherwelt' was introduced in 2016 and started as a series of workshops that were rolled out at elementary schools. To bring the initiative to life in Poland, bg电子娱乐场 works with an external partner 鈥楴auka Jest fajna!鈥. 鈥淭he initiative is a great opportunity to engage with local schools, and also with our employees. People who work at our production sites can nominate elementary schools where our workshops then take place. In this way, we can engage with the communities close to our locations in Poland,鈥 says Dorota Strosznajder, Head of Corporate Communications in Poland and part of the 'Forscherwelt' project team. 鈥淭he feedback from teachers and children has been great. For kids at local schools, the 'Forscherwelt' workshops are often their first encounter with scientific procedures.鈥
Until now, more than 4,000 children have been reached through 'Forscherwelt' workshops in Poland. To extend the initiative鈥檚 portfolio, a video series was launched last year to make 'Forscherwelt' experiments available to children all over Poland.

Russia

In the 'Forscherwelt' in Russia, children experiment under the guidance of professional tutors from the Moscow State Palace for Youth Creativity.

When it was launched in 2014, the bg电子娱乐场 'Forscherwelt' in Russia was one of the first international locations participating in this initiative. Due to a partnership with the Moscow State Palace for Youth Creativity, one of the most renowned educational centers for kids, the 'Forscherwelt' initiative in Russia now has access to a permanent lab and professional tutors who lead the lessons. More than 5,500 children have participated in lessons held at this location, as well as open classes at schools, lessons at bg电子娱乐场 sites and at special events. 鈥淚t's amazing to see how the children's eyes light up when they learn something new and interesting. And when they conduct experiments with their own hands, there is no limit to their happiness,鈥 says Galina Timonina, External Communications Manager at bg电子娱乐场 and part of the 'Forscherwelt' project team in Russia.

The Russian 'Forscherwelt' projects have received internal and external recognition as a leading example of this initiative in action 鈥 and they have also had a lasting impression on the kids who attend. More than 60 percent of the participating children have returned to the 'Forscherwelt' for more classes. 鈥淚t is so important to expose kids to science at an early age. With 'Forscherwelt', we鈥檝e sparked kids鈥 interest in natural science and ecology. This new generation is our future!鈥 says Natalia Ovakimian, Head of Corporate Communications Russia.

North America

In partnership with the Mill River Park Collaborative, the 'Forscherwelt' in North America is also facilitating virtual classes for children due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, the 'Forscherwelt' initiative was introduced in North America, when bg电子娱乐场 teamed up with two non-profit organizations in Stamford, US. The bg电子娱乐场 'Forscherwelt' curriculum sparked excitement for topics including sustainability, responsible consumer habits, recycling, and more. As it was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, the team adapted the experiments into a hybrid format featuring a series of virtual lessons conducted via Zoom that led up to an outdoor event in the park, when it was safe for everybody to attend. 鈥淥verall, we held seven 'Forscherwelt' classes. It was wonderful to see the students鈥 curiosity about science emerge as they progressed from the Zoom lessons to the lab experience during our on-site event,鈥 says Lee Anne Fernandez, Corporate Communications Manager at bg电子娱乐场 North America and part of the 'Forscherwelt' project team in Stamford. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive: 鈥淚 did not know science could be that much fun!鈥 one student said.

Dubai

Opening of the

The 'Forscherwelt' in Dubai, which just opened in November 2019, offers children aged seven to eleven free modules with hands-on experiments on everyday topics.

In November 2019, bg电子娱乐场 opened its first permanent 'Forscherwelt' science lab for children in Dubai. Created in partnership with the Dubai Municipality鈥檚 Children鈥檚 City, the lab was set up to encourage curiosity among children in Dubai and is the largest global 'Forscherwelt' location. The new, purpose-built science center is the first of its kind in the Middle East. The lab welcomes local children and school groups to 45-minute modules that are free to attend.

South Korea

Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, the virtual offerings of the 'Forscherwelt' in Korea were intended to support children's learning at home.

In Korea, children can join the 'Forscherwelt' with the help of entertaining videos and replicate experiments at home.

South Korea joined the 'Forscherwelt' initiative in 2020 with a digital pilot project. A range of simple and fun science experiments were introduced through video sessions and interactive virtual classes. These science experiments are easy enough to be recreated at home, which encourages the children to actively participate. 鈥淐hildren of employees, as well as any children who have applied for our digital 'Forscherwelt' program, can participate in the online sessions. We also sent out 300 science kits for our experiments to children in underprivileged families, to help them obtain scientific knowledge and enjoy the fun experiments at home,鈥 says Michelle Kim, Head of Corporate Communications in South Korea. Starting the 'Forscherwelt' in South Korea as a digital project was especially important when the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic hit. 鈥淲e want children to have fun while learning from home. While most of the traditional face-to-face classes were disrupted by the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, this online class aimed to help them keep learning during the pandemic.鈥

In November, bg电子娱乐场 and the Science Foundation in South Korea collaborated for a special online program for the South Korean Online Youth Science Festival, and invited 500 children to join a digital 'Forscherwelt' session. In the future, the 'Forscherwelt' project in South Korea is expected to develop even further 鈥 in close collaboration with the South Korean Ministry of Science and Technology.
